ETC's heropower is essentially a gamble. You are looking for buddies that provide either tempo or value generation in the early game. These include Lil K.T., Brann's Epic Egg, Rafaam's buddy and more.
These buddies are all found at tier 3, so i would recommend that you go 3 on 3 if you get a token start or a token later on that you can freeze in order to 1.) buy the token 2.) sell the token and 3.) heropower on tier 3 on turn 4.
Don't get baited by one-off 'fun' buddies if you are given the option for value-buddies in the early game.
